Have you ever really wondered how plants we see every day can be POWERFUL? Some of
them can even be down-right poisonous! Water Bear knew that Giant Hogweed can cause rashes, while Hummingbird added that it can possibly cause blindness. Blue Racer knew some mushrooms can be poisonous. Just wait...can't many plants be healing too? We found out!
At Sunrise Hill, Willow read a story about How Medicine Came to the Haudenosaunee People. While the Old Man (Water Bear) in the legend knocked on the longhouse door of many clans, he was turned away again and again because he looked dirty and had torn moccasins. Which clan did you belong to? Finally, Bear Clan Mother welcomed him into their longhouse, fed him and mended his clothes. What gift did the Old Man give the Bear Clan mother in return for her kindness? Do you remember some of the plants that have powerful medicine? (sage, goldenrod, stinging nettle...). Can you explain what the message in this legend is for all of us? (show caring & kindness towards elders and those in need).
This led to our medicine walk. You looked for and collected parts of plants that could be mixed into powerful potions. These potions gave you a positive power. What was your superpower?
Sunflower can build barriers with sunflower seeds and grow watermelons and ice cream
Firefly has invisibility for her superpower.
Owl’s potion lets her fly on owls and to be able to talk to owls.
Blue Racer is a plant healer, while teleportation was Pin Cherry’s superpower.
TALK ABOUT CREATIVE KIDS!!!!
Welcome to our new friend Alice, who chose her tree friend today. Who was it?
Grey Squirrel was in the mood for riddles. Can you retell any of the riddles you heard today. It seems library is calm and happy. What's your favourite part about this time in our day?
Mystery Forest was the potion creation headquarters. We ground, stirred, pounded, crushed, milled and shredded plants using mortar and pestles. Herbs, coloured water and essential oil drops were added to the mixtures as well. What superpower did your potion create and what are your special ingredients? Did you add a spell?
Down of duck was added to Water Bear’s potion and guts of a lemur by Owl, while striped tiger noses was added by Firefly.
Nope, that's not a secret ingredient!
Back at the hall, Bluebird (Betty) was waiting to start us on a new spool knitting project. Can you talk about what you are making for your tree friend? Give a step-by-step at home to teach how spool knitting is done. Thank you Bluebird!
Nature notebooks are the perfect place to write down our potion ingredients and how we made them. Owl created a rhyming poem to share about her potion.
There will be more changes around the pond when you visit again....and hopefully some things will stay the same.
Halloween may have made us a bit tired, but we got into the spirit and embraced the weather. Get ready for FALLING BACK in time tomorrow night. Enjoy that extra hour of rest Forest Friends!
