The change of season always provides an opportunity for us to sharpen our observation skills. “Has Spring really sprung?’ was the question of the day. Using our senses of sight, smell, hearing, and touch, we were on a quest to explore each of the different areas around Harrington Pond to find an answer to this question.
What new things did you find as you walked around outside the hall? Did you notice any traces of winter? What was the experiment we started and what are we hoping to find?
We noticed a lot of changes on the east side of the pond. Some people really like change. Other people wish things would just stay the same. Think about how the change from winter to spring makes you feel. Don’t forget the book that Grey Squirrel read to us (“Sometimes I Feel Like a River”) and our conversation about how you can always find at least one good thing about something you don’t really like.
Having a nature notebook is a great tool for recording a moment in time. While exploring the west side of the pond, we were each able to write down many differences that we noticed since the last time we were there. It was amazing to see so many changes.

Spring is a time when many people spend their weekends outside, cleaning up the mess that Old Man Winter left us! Our winter shelter was definitely happy for the TLC we gave it today. Thanks to the cedar boughs Raccoon brought to Harrington, we were able to work hard as a team to plug up some of the gaps.
We were also surprised to make a few interesting discoveries as we searched for more nature materials around the shelter. What were the discoveries we made and what story did you create from them?

On our listening/looking walk to Mystery Forest, we took our time so that we could check for more signs of Spring. What surprised you the most? Without all of the snow in this area, we had even more energy to do some of our favourite things and even new activities.
Close your eyes and use your senses to transport yourself back to winter time. Think about how winter made you feel. Now open your eyes and look around you. Welcome spring! It may seem like it’s just taking baby steps right now but think about all the incredible discoveries we made today when we took the time to look and listen! The thing about Spring is that it doesn’t reveal itself all at once. Who knows what Spring surprises will be waiting for us next week?

Keep practicing your poems. We'll be so excited to hear and see them at the Gallery April 5th!
