Our morning started outside Harrington Hall on the hill enjoying some tobogganing. Everyone came ready for adventures! Whether you’re hiking through a snowy forest, tobogganing down a hill, or simply enjoying the crisp winter air, exploring the outdoors in the colder months can be exciting. However, it’s important to be prepared and stay safe. Cold weather can bring its own challenges, from frostbite to the danger of getting lost, but being ready for the weather, you can enjoy your winter adventure while keeping yourself and others safe.
There are so many fun winter activities. What is your favourite activity? What was one of the popular winter activities that our group of Turtles liked to do?
A special "Thank You" to Heron, Bluebird and Raccoon today for being our Nature Mentors for keeping up with everyone and helping us stay safe!
One of the most serious concerns when spending time outside in winter is frostbite. It occurs when skin and tissues freeze due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. What are the stages of frostbite? Deep frostbite causes skin to turn dark or black. Do you know what to do if you think you have frostbite? What did you do when you got a clothespin n the game we played? Although, Red Fox is so fast he never got tagged! Thanks to Dr. Monarch and Nurse Heron for taking care of the safe removal of clothespins!
When you’re venturing into the woods or along winter trails, it’s easy to lose your way, especially when everything looks white and unfamiliar. Trail markers (or blazes) are there to guide you, but in the winter, they can sometimes be covered by snow. Turtles are so good at spotting things along the trail. Do you remember what some of the blazes might look like and what they mean?
In the winter, it’s easy to get distracted by the beauty of the snow-covered world around you, but it’s important to stay together as a group. If you’re traveling through the forest, make sure no one gets separated—being alone in the winter can lead to accidents or getting lost. Keep everyone within sight, and stick to the designated path or area like Mystery Forest!
How can we be safe when tobogganing at Sunrise Hill? Today, we saw a sled slide onto the ice. What did we do? It's important to remember that a sled is replaceable and someone could have been seriously hurt by going out on the ice to get the sled. Later, Raccoon was able to retrieve it later using a long rope and a stick while he stood safely away from the ice.
At the library, Grey Squirrel read us a poem by Robert Frost. What did you like about it? Grey Squirrel also had a great idea for a Safe Winter Weather Book which we could write in and draw pictures of ways we can be safe. What did you draw?
