Have you ever wondered how animals do such a great job camouflaging themselves? Well the Turtles certainly gave it some thought as they started the day at Butterfly Hill. Did you know that being great at camouflage means you blend into your surroundings but you also need to make yourself really small and very quiet? Red Fox thought it was important to be very flat. Congratulations to Snapping Turtle and Black Bear for being the last to be found by Dragonfly two games in a row! It was great to see some of our friends playing camouflage games on their own during our morning wander time. Do you remember the two nests Dragonfly discovered sitting together in the tree? They were nicely camouflaged too. At butterfly hill, Woodpecker noticed that the “Garden” where it says “Do Not Mow” would be a great place for animals to hide from predators.
Nothing is better than having a friend you can trust. How did you feel when your partner led you all the way to Butterfly Hill and back to the bridge while you were blindfolded? We realized how important it is to give clear instructions and to be an attentive listener. Catfish said it made him feel nervous, walking and not being able to see where he was going! Hawk was encouraged by his leader to pick up a beautiful dried flower. Nice work keeping Hawk engaged and safe, Snapping Turtle!
Grey Squirrel really tested our rhyming skills in the library. Grey Wolf was a rhyming expert and was able to finish many of the rhyming couplets that Grey Squirrel read in the book “If I was the Sunshine”. We learned lots of different sounds that animals make. “Oscar and Bat” taught us about lots of sounds in nature and on the farm made by living and non-living things. Did you know that grasshoppers make sounds by rubbing their legs together? What else do you remember about nature sounds from our day?
In the afternoon the Turtles were off on the deer trail heading towards Mystery Forest. We mixed soil, leaves and plants in our mud kitchen, using all different colours of water (green, red blue and yellow). Did you use the mortar and pestle to help mash things up? Pileated Woodpecker used some of the soil to give to his tree friend and made a special potion to keep the vegetarian monster away. How did you like visiting your tree friend? What was the gift you gave to your friend? A pizza, smoothie or something else? Some of us gave our tree friend a squash or an apple. I wonder whether the squirrels and birds will enjoy some of the food as well?
The wandering turned into wondering during our journal writing time as we drew pictures of animals on the farm, in our homes and in nature and thought about how to write the sounds they make. It was nice to show and share our nature notebooks afterwards! Happy Trails! Dragonfly, Cardinal and Ladybug.
