As spring plants burst upwards it seems wintery ice is determined to cover them up. Spring has sprung? Mother Nature seemed to have other ideas. Did you feel ice crystals sting your cheeks, maybe your jacket and hat got covered in ice pellets, how about all those branches getting blown down. Do you think the sap was running today?

At the new Outpost it seemed like we all wanted to winterize. What did you add to make this shelter weather tight?

Our focus is on what is new and changing at the farm. If we miss the early risers (plants who are out of bed in March and April) we can miss an important part of their life cycle. What early risers did you study today? Describe them in words. Your coloured popsicle sticks mark 5 plants that you will watch over. Do you think you’ll remember where to find yours next week? What changes do you expect?
Here YOU are….tell the story!
We know that naturalists are people who study what's happening outside in order to teach others about nature. Today we were also botanists when we sat down to make some notes about the new plants we noticed around the farm. Which plants were you able to identify without looking at the guide sheet? How does it make you feel to know some of the names and interesting facts about these spring plants?
Sometimes the weather can cause our plans to change. Just imagine if the seasons never changed. What are some of the things you would miss? We thought if we took the time to write down the signs of spring we look forward to, it just might chase Old Man Winter away until next year. Our indoor games and painting sure made for a neat twist when the wind came up.
Let's hope for some sunshine and warmer weather next time. Keep your eyes down as spring shows it's nicer side. Right under your feet the early risers are waiting to be discovered!
