Bright Beginnings for Turtles!

Twelve little turtles met at Harrington Hall for their first day of Coyote Nature School. Starting the day with an official picture and welcome and tour.

At Coyote Nature School, the world outside is our classroom and what we do in school is not just about walking on the trails or sitting on the grass. Much of our day was spent outdoors. What did your child like about being outside all day?  What was hard about being outside all day?

Today it was sunny and we could see our shadows. We played a quick game of shadow tag.  Is it hard to keep track of where your shadow is?  Why can we see our shadows when the sun is out? Shadows are always moving and changing. We tried an experiment to see if shadows move by making a sundial. We put a stick in the ground where it was very sunny and each student put a rock in a spot around that stick.  What did your child notice about the shadow at the end of the day?

While walking on the trail, we made some discoveries. First, there was some hair on the trail in the grass. We could see a few different colours in the bundle of hair. We wondered “Why was it there and what animal did it come from?”.  We saw bugs including damselflies and mosquitoes.  A large seed pod of the “Wild Cucumber” was discovered by a student while walking on the trail. What did it look like and how many seeds did it have inside?  Ask your child about a discovery they made on the trail?

A compass is a way that can help us know what direction (North, South, East, West) we are traveling. What did you child like about using a compass?  What directions did we travel?  We traveled south on the trail all the way to Cedar Castle. What does your child remember about Cedar Castle?

There were a few times we were inside. Our morning circle time was indoors and we’ve started learning the Morning Affirmation. I love the part when we say “Ready to discover”. Literacy is a part of our day. Cardinal read a book called “Franklin’s Partner”. Who was Franklin’s partner and what were they working on? The Harrington Library is also open for our school to visit, read, colour and take out books. What kind of books does your child like to read? At the end of the day, we started making some notes and drawing in our Nature Notebooks. One of the special memories for one student today was making new friends. Does your child remember the name of a new friend from today?

Thanks to Coyote and volunteers Cardinal and Raccoon for making our day special! Happy Trails!
